Time’s Up For The Tour De France

Time’s Up For The Tour De France

Today is the start of the world’s most prestigious cycling race - the Tour de France! Since its inception in 1903, the annual cycle race has captured the attention and hearts of cycle fans across generations and around the world. Consisting of 21 day-long races which are called ‘stages’ spread over a 23 day period where cyclists ride across various regions in France and occasionally internationally. The Tour de France is both a demonstration of the determination and skill of the world’s best cyclists and the beauty of the French landscapes across the almost 3500 kilometres of track that the cyclists cover during the Tour de France.

This years’ edition of the Tour de France began in Copenhagen, Denmark and is the landmark race as it will be the first to have a mens and women’s cycling tour. With time being such a crucial part of the Tour de France, it is no surprise the timepieces continue to play a crucial part in this prestigious cycling race. Famous cyclists are never seen without their favourite watches.

Known as one of the greatest road sprinters in the history of cycling, Mark Cavendish has numerous accolades during his cycling career. Since turning professional in 2005, the Manx-born cyclist has won Olympic medals in Rio and has won 34 individual stages in the Tour de France, a single stage off the overall record. Outside his success in cycling, Mark Cavendish is known for being a superfan of Richard Mille watches. His favourite Richard Mille watch is the RM-011 Felipe Massa 10th Anniversary Edition, gifted to him by Richard Mille himself. This exclusive timepiece features a hand finished titanium carbon case, flyback chronograph movement and unique bezel design that celebrates the career of Felipe Massa. For such an impressive timepiece, it is important to keep it properly maintained and stored away. The Quantum Quad Watch Winder is the perfect way to ensure that this exclusive watch is properly winded when not worn, while being stored away in a beautifully designed classic metallic leather winder. With space for up to four watches, the Quantum Quad Watch Winder will keep all Mark Cavendish’ watches ticking and in pristine condition.

Another familiar face that is recognisable for even non-cycling fans, Chris Froome has achieved an incredible career since turning professional at the age of 22. Growing up in Kenya and later representing Great Britain internationally, Chris Froome has won two Olympic gold medals, achieved a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championship and four editions of the Tour de France in the past decade. Froome has become synonymous with resilience and perseverance since a serious training accident in 2019 had led him sidelined for a significant time but he has since continued to race and will be competing in this year’s edition of the Tour de France as a member of ‘Israel-Premier Tech’ team. Froome’s most treasured timepiece is his Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600. A historic piece in the Rolex collection, the Sea-Dweller is known for its deep collaboration with diving professionals and is known for being waterproof to a depth of 1220 metres. For this classic timepiece, we recommend storing it in our Vantage Three Watch Roll. A perfect travel companion, the Vantage Three Watch Roll is expertly designed in a unique hexagonal shape and available in three distinct colours that all embody a refined elegant look. For someone always on the move like Chris Froome, the Vantage is the best way to keep his timepieces stored away safely while on the go.

As one of the prominent professional cyclists from Colombia, Rigoberto Uran has certainly made a name for himself in the world of cycling. Winning a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and later becoming the first Colombia to reach the podium in the Giro d’Italia. In the 2017 Tour de France, Uran finished second, only 55 seconds away from the overall race winner Chris Froome. Rigoberto’s timepiece of choice is his TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500 Calibre 5. A distinctive timepiece that is known for its ability to remain waterproof in depths of up to 500 metres and with a noticeable crown and bezel that makes it an instant classic. With a bruised stainless steel case and luminous hand and hour markers that jumps for attention and makes the timepiece eye-catching! For Rigoberto’s timepiece, we recommend the Heritage Four Watch Box. A watch box with a design that embodies all that is heritage, with hand-applied lacquer finish and matching suede lining. With a sleek handcrafted design that is highlighted by its unique colour stain finishes and featuring a lock and key, the Heritage Four Watch Box is a great choice for storing Rigoberto’s Aquaracer and other treasured timepieces.

To truly celebrate this years’ Tour de France, the Tissot T-Race Tour de France 2022 Special Edition is the watch to do so. Specially designed by Swiss watchmakers Tissot, this timepiece embodies the tales of human exceptionalism and perseverance shown by the cyclists across all the stages of the Tour de France. Featuring an iconic stainless steel case that is meant to mimic the classic designs of racing bicycles, this Tissot timepiece is a truly special watch for this occasion. With the Tour de France logo engraved on the caseback and featuring the iconic yellow trim that is synonymous with the Tour de France on crown and watch hands, this timepiece will be a long-lasting reminder of the joys and achievements of the 2022 Tour de France.
